A Guide To Gift Baskets For Canadian Holidays

Canada gift basket delivery service Clare’s Gift Baskets of Canada has long experience helping people in Europe, the US, the UK and beyond send gift baskets such as food hampers and gourmet cookie bouquets to friends and relatives in Canada. Since many people outside of Canada aren’t familiar with occasions they can use to send gift baskets (and other presents) to Canada, the company tracks Canadian holidays to help their customers select a basket for the right occasion, and to find an occasion that serves as a good excuse to send one, too. According to the company, the following Canadian holidays are ideal times to send gift baskets.

Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas and Easter Gift Baskets to Canada

These holidays are standards for gift basket deliver across the Western world, including Canada. The traditional gifts people give in the US and UK suit many Canadians as well. As a multicultural society Canadians celebrate other holidays from non—European cultures as well, though these aren’t as widely recognized by the majority of Canadians. The important thing is to consider the background of the people you’ll be sending a gift basket to.

Victoria Day Weekend Gift Baskets to Canada

The Victoria Day Weekend is one of Canada’s major holidays, but this generally isn’t well known outside of the country. It marks the formal birthday of the monarch in Canada, based on Victoria’s birthday on May 24th. In modern times, the holiday falls on the last Monday before May 24th, creating a long weekend. For most Canadians it marks the start of the summer: a time to visit the cottage, relax outdoors and generally enjoy themselves. Since it’s liked to May 24th, many Canadians call the holiday “May 2-4” – “2-4” being Canadian slang for a case of 24 beer bottles. This is a great time to send a gift basket to Canada, particularly a food hamper, as many Canadians would rather not bother running out for party provisions in the middle of the weekend.

Canada Day Gift Baskets

Canada Day is the country’s annual patriotic celebration, originally called Dominion Day from the time when Canada was a British possession instead of the independent Commonwealth member it is today. It is the anniversary of the July 1st, 1867 signing of the British North America Act, which unified Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec) with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, into a single country. Like Victoria Day, this is another great time for a gift basket, as all Canadians have the day off as a federal statutory holiday. It’s another time when gift recipients will appreciate someone sending snacks and treats to tide him over during celebrations. Canada Day tends to be a family-oriented day too, so gift baskets with cookies and other items that have “kid appeal” are often appreciated.

Labour Day Weekend Gift Baskets to Canada

Just as Victoria Day marks the start of Canada’s summer, the Labour Day weekend marks its end. Canadians celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday of September, creating another long weekend. In most of the country, this is the last ideal time to go to the countryside because it’s still warm, but too late in the year for mosquitoes. Once again, it’s the perfect time to send a gift basket as party provisions for the lash hurrah, before colder weather comes once again.

The Ultimate Kitchen Sink Buying Guide

If you’re looking to buy a kitchen sink, then you must consider every detail and feature. The Kitchen sink is probably the most used aperture in the whole household, even if you’re using a dishwasher, most of the cleaning is still done in your ordinary kitchen sink, all the more reason why you should find the best one around.

Size

Choosing a kitchen sink apart from being a question of quality is also a question of need. Most of the standard sinks that you will find in the market roughly consist of two 22 by 30 inch sized bowls both 8 inches in depth, however, if you use large pots, you might want bigger sizes or you might want to have them specially made. Nine and Ten inch deep bowls are also available commercially. Added features like bowls for peeled fruits in the center can be very handy.

Whistles and Bells

If you want your sink to have all the whistles and bells available, then you might want more pre-drilled holes on it. Most sinks have four holes on it, one for the hot knob, one for the cold knob, one for the faucet and another one for the shower feature. Some sinks however have extra spouts, for soap dispensers, an air gap for the dishwasher drain, a liquid soap dispenser, a TV, well just kidding about the TV. But if some sinks have extra features that you might not want to use, you can always ask the supplier for ready made plugs to cover the unused holes, conversely, if the sink you choose doesn’t have enough holes, you can easily drill a hole in your sink, or maybe have it drilled by a professional.

Installation

Apart from choosing a design and a type, you should also be aware of your sink’s location, will your chosen sink fit in the desired location etc. You can choose from a self rimming sink or an undermount. A self rimming sink is easier to install and would just rest on top of your counter, however, the underside where the sink meets the countertop can be a breeding ground for bacteria and may be hard to clean. An undermount however, is harder to install because it has to be attached from under the counter. This type however, is easier to clean.

Type of Sink

Now we proceed to choosing which type of sink to choose. To make the choice easier, a few pros and cons are listed together with a brief description of each type of sink.

Stainless Steel

This is probably the most common kitchen sink around and is available in all prices ranges. However, you don’t expect to buy the best quality sink for a cheap price. Usually a cheap stainless steel sink is made of thin metal which flexes and vibrates. This is especially bad because of the racket it makes when the water drums on it or when the garbage disposal vibrates. A good quality sink doesn’t get scratched easily and should be easy to clean. A sign of a good quality sink is also its ability to maintain a brand new appearance even if you just wipe it.

A general rule for buying stainless steel sink is not to buy mirror type ones, sure they’ll look great when brand new, but overtime scratching will mar its surface and give it a foggy dirty look. Another good tip is to check the insulation under the bowl, insulation deadens the water drumming. Foam insulations are always better than those that are just sprayed on.

Enameled Cast Iron

The best thing about enamel cast iron sinks is its elegant finish which is available in many colors. It has a very hard finish and will rarely chip. Another good thing about this is its resistance to water drumming. It keeps hot water hot longer, and if you’re excited about that, you’ll be happy to know that clean up is a breeze, a good wipe over should be enough for this baby to get back its original shine.

Warning: There are Enameled Steel sinks, but these aren’t the same quality as cast iron sinks.

Composite sinks

These are sinks made from a mixture of two different substances to make a very sturdy material. Generally, Acrylic and fiberglass aren’t a very good combination because they tend to easily absorb stains and as time passes, lose the glossy finish.

A Quartz composite sink might be the best choice for this range of sinks. These are known for their durability.

Composite sinks however, are susceptible to scratching. You should avoid rubbing sand or dirt on them or using abrasive cleaners. The water drumming is still present but probably not as loud as stainless steel sinks.

Tip: To make sure that you have a sturdy sink, press down on the bowl, if it flexes, there are chances of a noisy garbage disposal.

Integral solid surface

You can buy a sink that is already integrated with a countertop, mostly in the same color or a complementary design. These types are easily scratched but are easily repaired as
well. The bad side is if you’re tired of the sink, you’ll have to remove the whole countertop.

Guide to the Greek Orthodox Wedding Ceremony

The wedding service in the Greek Orthodox faith is an ancient and beautiful ceremony, which has been celebrated in its current form for centuries. The wedding ceremony is full of symbolism and is a great experience if you have never attended one before, because it is likely to be quite different from other weddings you have attended in Western Europe. The service is also rather unique because the bride and groom do not make vows to each other – their presence together in the church is taken to mean that they are serious about getting married.

The Beginning of the Wedding

In most cases the wedding guests will wait with the groom outside the church until the bride arrives (a few sneaky wedding pros will go into the church early to secure a good seat). In the Summer, when most weddings take place, it is not unusual for ceremonies to be arranged back to back, so the guests attending a marriage will often stand around with those who have just attended the previous wedding as they prepare to leave. Wedding dress commentators among the crowd will get to consider and discuss at least two brides and maybe even a third as they leave the church – bargain! Meanwhile, the nervous groom waits for the bride at the entrance to the church, often holding her floral bouquet. He hands it to her as they meet and they then go inside together followed by the guests. There is no separation of the guests into guests of the bride and guests of the groom – everyone sits together and in the case of small churches, many people prefer to stand in a spot where they can get a good view of the proceedings.

Service of Betrothal

The wedding ceremony itself is in two parts: the Service of Betrothal and the Ceremony of the Sacrament of Marriage. The exchanging of rings is the focus of the Service of Betrothal. The priest blesses the rings by holding them in his right hand and making the sign of the cross over the heads of the bride and groom. The rings are then placed on the third fingers of their right hands. The “Koumbaro”, the couple’s religious sponsor, then swaps the rings over between the bride and groom’s fingers, three times. A number of rituals in the ceremony are repeated three times and this symbolises the Holy Trinity: God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Ceremony of the Sacrament of Marriage

This Ceremony consists of several key parts. First, several prayers are said and then as they come to an end, the priest joins the right hands of the bride and groom. Their hands remain joined until the end of the wedding ceremony, which symbolises the couple’s union.

The Crowning

The bride and groom are crowned with thin crowns, or “stefana”, which are joined by a white ribbon and have been blessed by the priest. The crowns symbolise the glory and honour that is being bestowed on them by God, and the the ribbon symbolises their unity. The “Koumbaro” then exchanges the crowns between the heads of the couple, three times.

The Common Cup

The crowning is followed by a reading of the Gospel, which tells of the marriage of Cana at Galilee. It was at this wedding that Jesus performed his first miracle, changing water into wine, which was then given to the married couple. Wine is given to the couple and they each drink from it three times.

The Ceremonial Walk

The priest the leads the couple, who are still wearing their “stefana”, three times around the altar on their first steps as a married couple. The “Koumbaro” follows close behind the couple holding the “stefana” place. At this point the couple (and anyone standing nearby) is usually showered with rice, which was earlier handed out to the wedding guests. The priest will often make use of the bible he is holding to give himself some protection!

The Removal of the Crowns

When the Ceremonial Walk has ended, the priest blesses the couple, the crowns are removed and he then separates their previously joined hands with the bible, reminding them that only God can break the union which they have just entered into.

Wedding traditions

Much of the information available on Greek Orthodox wedding traditions is a little outdated and contains generalisations that give the impression that certain traditions are followed by everyone who gets married. Some of these traditions are set out below

- Rolling a baby on the marital bed to encourage fertility.

- The throwing of money onto the marital bed.

- The pinning of money onto the bride (and sometimes also the groom) at the wedding reception.

Although these rituals are seen as traditional, fewer and fewer young people marrying today are following them, because they are seen as old-fashioned. Many people do not wish to put their guests through the ordeal of other people being able to see how much money they pin on the bride, for example. Although money is still a very common, as well as practical, wedding present it is often given to the couple before the wedding day or to a third person at the wedding reception, for safe-keeping. Greeks living in the more remote parts of Greece and abroad, who will naturally feel more strongly about doing things the traditional way, are more likely to follow these traditions than those living in Athens, for example. Like weddings everywhere, Greek weddings are changing. At the time of writing, there is a growing fashion to go and get married on an island and I recently heard someone say that he was looking into getting married in a ski resort. He was wisely advised by a friend “You had better first ask the priest if he wants to perform a marriage up a mountain”!

Spa Etiquette 101 – Your Complete Guide to Spa Etiquette

1) Tardiness- As a common courtesy, please arrive at least 15-20 mins before your scheduled appointment at your spa. This will allow time for a leisurely check-in, a change of clothes and a few moments to relax before your wonderful spa experience.

You want to be able to get the full effects of this special treat. Rushing and arriving late will unfortunately limit the time for your treatment, thus setting you up to feel tense, anxious, and prevent you from enjoying this blissful occasion. Your treatment must end on time so that the next guest’s service will not be delayed. Your scheduled time is your table time. If you arrive late to your day spa , you will be charged in full and that will truly be unfortunate.

2) Cancellations or Appointment Changes – Spa services are booked months in advance. If you must cancel or change your appointment time, the usually give you 24-48 hours prior to your scheduled time to avoid any charges. Be sure that you are clear on the spa’s cancellation and appointment change policies. Otherwise they may very well bill you for the full amount.

3) Walk-ins – Most day spas do their best to accommodate you with walk-ins. However, a specific time that you desire may not be guaranteed, so it is always best to make an appointment in advance if you require a certain time.

4) Dress Code – I would suggest you wear casual attire something you can easily slip off and on without fussing. Not all spas allow you to bring your own robes or slippers into the spa. Find out ahead of time if they will allow you to have treatments in your own undergarments or swimsuit, however please understand that they are not responsible for any damage or staining to these articles. To protect your clothing, most day spas provide you with disposable underwear, robes and slippers while at the day spa. Again always find out before hand.

5) Modesty – The best way to receive a massage or other bodywork at the spa is to be unclothed. HOWEVER, they should “never require” you to disrobed if it makes you uncomfortable. Only Disrobe To Your Comfort Level! If modesty is an issue please don’t hesitate to speak up while you still have you clothes on. You can also ask about spa treatments that can be done while you’re fully clothed. Most therapists are trained in the “art of draping.” They will leave the treatment room while you get under the sheet on the table, keep you covered at all times, except for the area of the body they are working on, and will leave the spa treatment room before you get up from the table. Depending on the service and your needs, you may receive a robe and slippers for your treatment. Make sure the spa will provide you with any necessary towels, robe and slippers for you to wear during your visit.

6) Valuables – Check to see if the day spa you are visiting provide you with secured lockers, showers and a variety of personal items for your use. Most spa therapies flow more easily without the interference of jewelry. I recommend removing all jewelry and placing them in a secure locker. Never put them in your robe pocket! Frantic searches in robe pockets or nooks and crannies in the treatment room are stress producing for everyone involved. Please do not bring valuables into the spa as the staff cannot be responsible for loss or damage of such items.

7) Shaving – If you need to shave (particularly beardless men receiving a facial), do it at least two hours before your spa appointment. If you have booked a body scrub, I highly recommend shaving the day before. Rubbing salt into the slightest razor wound is not a very relaxing experience. Ouch!

8 ) Courtesies and Comforts – OK gadget-aholics….Please turn of all cell phones and pagers before entering the spa. The spa is an oasis of peace and quiet. Although spas try to disguise outside interference with music, fountains and sound-absorbent walls, loud voices and noises do filter through. Please be mindful of the other spa goer’s enjoying their peaceful moments, and try to keep the volume of your conversations to a minimum. Be mindful that most day spas are a smoke-free environment.

9) Food and Beverage- It’s best not to receive bodywork on a full stomach before going to the spa. Schedule meals or snacks at least an hour before your spa treatment. Drink water, especially if heat therapies are part of your spa package. Since bodywork introduces clean, oxygenated and nourished fluids into your tissues and stimulates your body to purge toxins, it is important to flush them out by drinking plenty of water. Be aware of what you’re putting into your nice clean body after your spa treatments, especially refined sugars, high fats, caffeine and most importantly, alcohol – these may have a stronger effect on you than normal. Toxins that are not flushed from your body can be reabsorbed and may give you a “toxin hangover”. Drink more water if this happens.

10) Age Restrictions- Children are a delight to have in your company whether you are a parent or not. However, so that the ambiance within the day spa remains as relaxing as possible for all of the participants (many of whom are enjoying a retreat from their little people), please do not bring them to the spa. Most day spas do not allow children under 14-18 years of age depending on the spa so please call ahead to find out the age restrictions. Some spas require a written consent for teens between 14-17. There are some spas that do make accommodations for toddlers and babies for specialized services on an availability basis.

11) Groups of Three or More- Proper coordination of your group reservation requires additional time by the spa staff to ensure that your spa visit is a success.

12) Communicating- Your spa treatment, your time, and your body are yours, you want to be able to thoroughly enjoy your day spa experience. Please be sure to communicate preferences to your therapist – the amount of pressure, room temperature, or whether you want conversation or silence. If you don’t tell your therapist, they won’t know if you’re feeling discomfort. Let your provider or staff member know immediately if you are feeling discomfort for any reason for any reason.

13) Pre-Treatment Forms- You may be required to complete a Pre-Treatment Form prior to your day spa service. Some medical conditions may prevent them from performing certain spa treatments. The information that you provide them will help to ensure that the spa services are provided in a safe manner, minimizing risk of injury.

14) Medical conditions and Health Consideration- If you have any type of medical condition or special needs, please be sure to inform the spa staff of it when you book the appointment. Certain spa treatments may not be advisable for you. Also, before your spa treatment begins, let your therapist or aesthetician know of any medical concerns. If you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, avoid any heat treatments. It is advisable to disclose medical conditions, pregnancy and medications. Some medical conditions and/or medications may prevent them from performing certain treatments. Be sure to inform your therapist if you are using Retin A, accutane, or have had laser surgery.

15) Pregnancy Safety Policy- Please note, no body treatments (massage or hydrotherapy) are performed during the first trimester of pregnancy. Manicures and pedicures can still be enjoyed be expecting mothers at the day spa, but please inform your therapist ahead of time.

16) Spa Gifts and Spa Discounts- Most day spas offer spa gift cards and spa gift certificates. Be aware that spa gift cards and spa gift certificates are non-refundable, non-transferable, may not be redeemed for cash or credit, and irreplaceable if lost or stolen. Please present all spa discounts, promotional coupons, spa gift certificate, and spa gift cards at check-in.

17) Pricing and Packages- Most often spa services and prices are subject to change without notice.

18) Payment- Day spas normally accept all major credit, special spa gift cards, spa gift certificates, spa discounts, cash, and some a
lso accept personal checks. Be sure to call ahead to see what form of payment options are available. Most of the time the setting of appointments are held with a credit card.

19) Gratuity- It is customary to provide your therapist or esthetician a 15-20% gratuity if you were happy with the services provided. Usually gratuities are accepted in cash and sometimes checks. Gratuities aren’t normally included with spa services and are your discretion.

20) Last but not least, Take it all in- Enjoy yourself. This is a special time to take for yourself or with someone special at your spa of choice. A time of tranquility, A time of rejuvenation, A time of relaxation, and most of all A time of blissful elations!

Ultimate Kitchen Sink Buying Guide

Family Guide For A Great Night’s Rest

Tips For Mom, Dad, Kids and Grandparents Alike

What you and your family do before bed may be causing you to lose valuable hours of sleep. The average person sleeps less than the recommended 8 hours, and 16% of adults sleep less than six. Below are helpful tips for the entire family to establish healthy sleeping patterns.

Mom & Dad

Stress in the number one reason the average person doesn’t sleep enough. Some doctors recommend moderate exercise followed by a warm shower an hour or two before bed. Working out for 20-30 minutes and getting your heart rate up releases feel-good endorphins and can lower anxiety and stress levels. Be careful not to exercise too close to bedtime, though.

Essential oils are another way to relax and make it easier to fall asleep. The most common essential oil sleep aid is lavender. Put a couple of drops on your pillow or get one already infused with lavender, like Natura’s Lavender pillow.

A lot of people watch TV before bed each night, but that can actually over stimulate your brain and make it harder to fall asleep. Instead, try white noise or nature sounds, such as ocean waves or forest noises. You can buy CDs with soundtracks of these soothing sounds.

Kids

While babies awake in the night for a variety of reasons, including hunger and the need for a diaper change, they also have trouble with temperature regulation. They may sweat, making their bedding wet and uncomfortable. Made with pure Cry Less™ wool, the Baby Natura puddle pad keeps the mattress fresh and dry without the harmful toxins and chemicals found in many plastic pads. The uniquely woven puddle pad provides a water repellent, yet naturally breathable barrier that discourages the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.

Older kids are a different story though. If you’ve ever seen a teen play a video game, you know there’s nothing relaxing about it. Get your kids to shut down the electronics and do something quiet an hour before bed. Reading with mom or dad, doing a puzzle or just talking can go a long way to getting your child – no matter what his age – ready for sleep.

Grandma & Grandpa

As people age, the body’s internal clock shifts, making bedtime earlier and earlier. Unlike teens, watching TV or playing a video game can actually help regulate a later bedtime – and a longer, deeper sleep.

Aches and pains are also a problem, which can disrupt sleep. An adjustable bed can help seniors sleep in the exact position that is most comfortable. The Naturaflex features a flexible slat suspension which also comes equipped with adjustable tension tabs. By sliding these tabs along the slats, tension in the hip area can be adjusted, bringing extra relief to sensitive areas.

Sleep shouldn’t be difficult. And with the proper support and the right tools, a good night’s sleep isn’t far away. NaturaWorld.com specializes in products designed to help you sleep better, improve your health and ultimately, get the most out of life.
